Players and their names
Name variants, and who counts as a player.
Players are named by initials and surname, such as JE Root or V Kohli, and full names where that is how a player is known, such as Babar Azam.
Other names
A player can be recorded under more than one name over a career. Search looks at all of them, so /v1/search?q= finds a player by any name they have been recorded under, and returns the one address that belongs to them.
Who counts as a player
Only people who have played in a match have player addresses. Umpires and referees appear by name on match pages but do not have player pages.
